Cats are so beautiful in themselves that it is difficult to improve on them in a painting; therefore, unlike my landscapes, I have painted most of these realistically. However one can take liberties with the background: I underpainted the stairs in gold for Metcalf, gave the Chaplain's cat a glorious throw to sit on, and the kittens a pretty piece of Indian embroidery.

Mistress Quickly was the exception: a dark tortoishell Persian, she reflected beautifully in the silver baubles! In 1987 we had neither computer nor printer, and  black and white suited the design well for our Christmas cards.
